Known as a bedroom community of Sacramento, Fair Oaks is located in unincorporated Sacramento County. Both a semi-rural and urban community Fair Oaks has around 28,000 people. Known for its citrus fruit, the big freeze in the 1930's along with the great depression wiped out that economic force. However, thanks to Aerojet and then the construction of highways to Sacramento, Fair Oaks was saved. Fair Oaks still has the feel of rural living though, as evidenced by the chickens that run free in Fair Oaks Village. Fair Oaks Village is the business core and town center. Not only does the Village have chickens running wild, (they like to roost in the two parks in town) but they also have rolling hills and narrow winding roads. Located in the Village is an open-air amphitheater, and a plaza with historic buildings full of unique shops and galleries. The Plaza Park Amphitheatre is the home of the Fair Oaks Theatre Festival, one of the diverse outdoor community theatres in the town. Other events held in the Village include the annual Fiesta Days, which is an event celebrating the residents of Fair Oaks. Other events held in Fair Oaks are almost too numerous to list, but a few include: the Senior Citizens Ball, Spring Garage Sale, Mother/Son Dance and Father/Daughter Dance, Harvest Day, Chicken Festival, (to celebrate the Village chickens) Comedy under the Stars, Christmas in the Village, and many more. With so many great attributes, it is surprising that Fair Oaks doesn't have a larger population, but the uniqueness and quaintness of the town lends itself to be a very special place to live, indeed.
