   Besides the famous Johnny Cash song that put Folsom on the map, there is much more to this city then just the prison.  With a population over 62,000 people, Folsom has a zoo, a community center, community clubhouses, parks, miles of recreation trails, swimming pools, tennis courts, baseball/softball fields, soccer/multi-purpose fields and outdoor basketball courts.  Folsom is also the site of the California 's first college and the West's first railroad where the gold rush began.   Folsom is moving forward into the future by planning new shopping districts, more high-tech firms moving into town, and is attracting more and more people for the great location and small town flavor.  With the influx of people, arrives more families.  The city is promoting this by keeping plenty of open park space, as well as community activities for the whole family to enjoy.

   One of the best parks and recreation is Folsom Lake.  Recreation at Folsom Reservoir is managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation. Facilities include 3 public campgrounds, 2 with showers, 60 miles of equestrian trails, 10 miles of paved bicycle trails, 8 miles of advanced mountain bike trails, and excellent year-round bank or boat fishing.

   Folsom Dam's primary function is flood control, however it also stores water for irrigation and for electrical power generation. Preservation of the American river fishery, and water-related recreation are also important activities.

  The historical district and old town with their landmarks, great scenery, and wonderful shopping are located just above the shores of Lake Natoma on the American River . Walking a short distance you can visit the entire old town.  The historic powerhouse which was the first powerhouse in the world to provide long distance electricity transmission for commercial use is located at the northeastern end of town.  With so many antique dealers, Folsom is one of the oldest and largest places of antiquing in the West.  With a varied amount of art studios, galleries and working artists, Folsom is also the place to be for art lovers.  Beyond the fascinating Folsom prison, lies a city with an remarkable past and extraordinary future.
